An industrial flange is a mechanical component used to connect pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment in a piping system. Each type serves a different purpose. For example, weld neck flanges are ideal for high-pressure applications because their long tapered hub reduces stress concentration, while blind flanges are used to close the end of a pipeline or vessel opening. Slip-on flanges are easier to install and are often used in lower-pressure systems. Socket weld and threaded flanges are suitable for smaller-diameter pipes, and lap joint flanges are useful where frequent disassembly is required.Material selection is another important factor. Industrial flanges may be made from carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, duplex steel, or other special metals depending on operating conditions. Carbon steel flanges are commonly used in general industrial service, while stainless steel flanges offer better corrosion resistance. For highly aggressive environments, special alloys may be required to improve durability and extend service life.Flanges are manufactured according to international standards such as ANSI, ASME, DIN, EN, and JIS. These standards define dimensions, pressure ratings, facing types, and testing requirements. Common pressure classes include 150, 300, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500, with higher classes designed for more demanding applications. Surface finishes and facing styles, such as flat face, raised face, and ring type joint, also affect sealing performance.In practical use, industrial flanges play a vital role in ensuring a piping system remains safe, efficient, and serviceable. Their detachable design allows technicians to access internal components without cutting pipes, saving time and reducing maintenance costs. Properly selected and installed flanges help prevent leaks, improve operational reliability, and support long-term system performance.
